WALL & COMPANY DONATES VAN TO ANGELS FUND
Often it's the unexpected gifts that mean the most.
Warren Wall of Wall & Company recently presented David and Bridget Walls of New Direction Ministries the keys to a minivan on behalf of Angel's Fund, a charity founded by Wall & Company aimed at supporting non-profit organizations in the Western North Carolina area. David said the gift would have a great impact.
"We get a lot of things donated to us, but we can really use this van. This is really nice," he said.
New Direction Ministries is a school that hosts troubled teens on two farms in the Laurel community of Madison County, approximately 25 miles north of Asheville. The boys' farm is a 150-acre establishment on the top of a mountain that houses the schoolhouse, kitchen house, woodshop and gym. The girls' farm is a 240-acre ranch 1.5 miles down the mountain from the boys' farm that features a riding ring and a 140-year-old house. The farms house six students each.
The Walls founded New Direction in 1997 after going through their own family crises with their children. David, a former stockbroker, and Bridget, a teacher, wanted to establish a facility that could rehabilitate troubled teens and acclimate them back to society without putting a financial strain on the teens' families.
The farms and school focus on a regimen of hard farm work, close instruction of school work and regular family visits. The Walls rely on private grants, as well as support and donations from churches and individuals. Warren Wall (no relation to David and Bridget Walls) has been a supporter of New Direction since its inception.
"He was one of the first believers," David said after receiving the van. "Warren has always been there and it's always been very generous."
Wall & Company puts aside a percentage of its profits each quarter into the Angel's Fund to donate to local non-profit organizations. Each year, Wall & Company employees choose an organization to help, which forms close ties between the staff members and their donor organizations.
"I think it means a lot to my staff to be able to do that," Warren said. "We could be involved in a general charity like the United Way, but this gives them direct control of where they want their charitable dollars to go."
